Software user seminar in Calgary on 21 June

The Calgary product user seminar is a one day event engaging users of Phast, Safeti, Synergi Pipeline Simulator (SPS) and Cascade. The singular purpose of this event is to provide high-quality technical content and opportunities to share with each other. Our hope is that by the end of the conference, you will have learned something new about the software, gained perspective on how others use the software, and contributed your own thoughts on how the software should evolve and to have made a few new contacts to add to your peer network

    Check valve modeling: closure times

The check valve device in SPS closes almost instantaneously when flow reverses if the closure time is left at the default setting. This represents the behaviour of an ideal check valve. User’s can override this behaviour by entering a closure time. Selecting an appropriate closure time is important when simulating terminal facilities.

Check valve modeling: using control valves

The check valve device in SPS will be either fully open when there is forward flow through it. The actual position of the check valves will depend on the force balance between the flowing fluid that pushes to open the check valve and gravity or springs that push to close the check valve. Modeling the check valve as a control valve can overcome this.

  • 11:00 -12:00

Evaluation of control valve performance in pipeline systems

The seminar will demonstrate application of SPS-offline simulator in a unique or innovative manner to evaluate control valve performance in the pipeline system. This will demonstrate how to use simulator for tuning PCV controller parameters for excellent pressure control loop performance with low pressure drop across the installation. The talk will also describe simulator application for PCV sizing and selection for various operating scenarios of pipeline (including abnormal scenarios).

Shut-in colum separation detection using ADL (application development language)

Column separations on shut-in pipelines is a condition that degrades leak detection during startups. To increase operator awareness Enbridge has developed a column separation detection algorithm that will alert the operator when a shut-in column separation occurs. This seminar will explore that algorithm and how it has been implemented within Enbridge’s SPS Real Time Transient Models using the application development language.
